Astrology Market, Differentiation and Ethics/Regulation Landscape (as of Oct 2026)

Researcher notes for a Vedic-astrology-grounded website. Dates are given for every figure; anything older than 2025 is flagged. Revenue and traffic figures from Semrush, Ahrefs and screensdesign are modelled estimates, not audited numbers.

1. Leaders: features, scale, business models, revenue

Takeaway

The Indian market is led by AstroTalk, a live marketplace that sells per-minute chat and calls with astrologers and is moving fast into commerce. It reported about ₹1,176 Cr in FY25 revenue, is a self-declared unicorn and plans an IPO. Free calculation and reference sites (Drik Panchang, Prokerala, AstroSage) earn their large traffic through SEO. In the West the models are freemium apps (Co-Star, The Pattern, CHANI) and subscription-plus-psychic-chat apps (Nebula, Sanctuary). The biggest 2026 event is Midjourney buying Co-Star.

Cited Findings

AstroTalk (India, marketplace and e-commerce)

  • Operating revenue: ₹283 Cr (FY23), ₹651 Cr (FY24), ₹1,176 Cr (FY25). FY26 guidance is about ₹1,850 Cr, not yet filed. — Inc42, 16 Aug 2026
  • Profit in FY25: PAT fell to about ₹33 Cr (FY24: ₹85.5 Cr) because of exceptional employee expenses whose size was not disclosed. PBT excluding those items was ₹285 Cr, up 125%. — Inc42, Aug 2026
  • Conflicting figure: an internal document seen by Entrackr gives FY25 revenue of ₹1,182 Cr and profit above ₹250 Cr. — Entrackr
  • Valuation is about $1 Bn, set internally through an ESOP buyback rather than a new raise ("133rd unicorn"). A reported $50 Mn round was never announced. The CEO says no pre-IPO capital is needed. — Inc42, Aug 2026
  • IPO: preparation is under way and Deepak Khetan was appointed CFO ahead of it. As of Aug 2026 no DRHP, bankers or timeline were confirmed, and one Inc42 piece mentions a planned 2027 listing. A separate Inc42 item cites a ₹92–97 price band; that is unverified and may be confused with another company. — Inc42; Entrackr; Inc42 buzz
  • Consultation unit economics:
    • Average order value is about ₹210.
    • About 65% of consultation revenue comes from marriage-related questions.
    • Core users are 25–35 years old, and 60% are women.
    • International revenue was about 20% of the total in FY25 and about 37% in FY26; the US is over 60% of international revenue.
    • — Inc42, Aug 2026
  • Astrotalk Store (gemstones, bracelets, puja items and similar):
    • More than ₹140 Cr revenue in its first year (2025) and ARR above ₹200 Cr.
    • About ₹900 AOV, more than 1.6 Mn orders and 300+ SKUs.
    • Targets FY27 ARR of ₹400–500 Cr.
    • Margins are not disclosed. Costs for gemstone authentication and returns are flagged as a risk.
    • Matchmaking and puja are offered free to a base of 4 Cr+ users.
    • — Inc42; Entrackr
  • Disputes: Astroyogi filed a trademark suit against AstroTalk. InstaAstro's CCI abuse-of-dominance complaint was quashed. AI chatbot challengers include AstroSure. The wider "spiritual economy" is estimated at $60–70 Bn. — Inc42, Aug 2026

AstroSage, Drik Panchang, Prokerala (India, reference and SEO-led)

  • AstroSage says its Kundli app passed 70 million Google Play downloads, with about 11 million monthly website users at that point (milestone date not captured). An undated third-party guide claims about 15M MAU. — AstroSage magazine; Miracuves 2026 guide
  • AstroSage also runs a live-consultation product, "AstroSage Varta". A 2023 review called its interface weak and its live sessions glitchy. — YourStory, Jan 2023
  • Drik Panchang: about 11.7–11.9M visits a month (Semrush, Aug–Sep 2025). Its audience is mostly India, then the US and Australia. — Semrush
  • Prokerala: 9.29M visits (Nov 2025) and 13.95M (Aug 2025) per Semrush. — Semrush
  • Ahrefs organic-traffic estimates (Jul 2025): Prokerala 7.8M, AstroSage 4.5M, Drik Panchang 3.9M. — Ahrefs India People & Society

Western apps

  • Co-Star:
    • Funding: about $21M in total, including a $5.2M seed and a $15M Series A led by Spark Capital (Apr 2021).
    • Claims 30M+ registered accounts (undated, company-sourced).
    • Freemium model with in-app purchases.
    • — Simplify; TechCrunch
  • Co-Star "The Void" is an AI feature that answers personal questions from the user's chart data. It launched around 2023, offers 3 free questions and is paid after that. — Bustle; Dealroom
  • Midjourney acquired Co-Star (Bloomberg, 24 Jul 2026). Co-Star had about 4.3M MAU per Sensor Tower. A Spanish-language report says 24 staff joined Midjourney and founder Banu Guler became Midjourney's Chief Design Officer; that report is single-source. — Bloomberg Law; wwwhatsnew, Jul 2026
  • Nebula (OBRIO, Ukraine): reported 30M users and $50M ARR in 2023 (2023 data). It offers horoscopes, birth charts and live psychic chat. — UNWE Startup Hub, Dec 2023; screensdesign
  • The Pattern:
    • Free with in-app purchases.
    • Focuses on personality ("Your Pattern"), timing cycles and relationship compatibility rather than forecasts.
    • Reportedly passed 15M users (2025).
    • A third-party revenue estimate is about $400K a month.
    • — App Store; screensdesign
  • Sanctuary launched at $20 a month (launch-era price, about 2019) and is built around live readings with astrologers, tarot readers and psychics. — The Hustle
  • CHANI: Hellenistic astrology, free to download, soft paywall with a free trial. CHANI says all its content is written by human astrologers, not AI (Oct 2025). — App Store; CHANI Substack, 1 Oct 2025

Inferences

  • In India the money is in human consultations (mostly about marriage) and physical "remedy" goods. Calculation is a commodity given away free to win traffic. A new entrant cannot beat AstroTalk at a talk-to-astrologer marketplace and should not try to.
  • The free-calculation leaders (Drik Panchang, Prokerala, AstroSage) win on breadth and SEO but have dated, ad-heavy interfaces. Their weak spots are design, transparency and teaching, not data.
  • The Co-Star acquisition shows AI and design companies value astrology audiences. It also confirms that design-led astrology apps work at scale in the West.
  • Products not verified in this session, described from general background knowledge: Jagannatha Hora (free Windows desktop software by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao, the analyst's standard), Parashara's Light (paid desktop software by GeoVision), astro.com/Astrodienst (Swiss Ephemeris maker; free charts plus paid reports), TimePassages (Western desktop and mobile). Confirm their current prices before citing them.

Gaps

  • No verified 2025–26 prices for CHANI, Co-Star premium, The Pattern, Nebula, Parashara's Light or TimePassages. Check the store pages.
  • No current figures for AstroYogi or Astrodienst revenue or users.
  • AstroTalk's per-minute prices, platform take rate and astrologer count were not found.
  • AstroTalk's IPO date is unconfirmed.

2. Common user complaints

Takeaway

The complaints repeat across platforms:

  • Pressure to buy remedies and gemstones, with fake or uncertified stones.
  • Astrologers whose quality varies widely, and predictions that contradict each other.
  • Fear-based selling ("misfortune" followed by "pay for a remedy").
  • AI-generated readings with obvious errors.
  • Heavy collection of personal and contact data (Co-Star).

Cited Findings

  • A TechEnclave thread ("AstroTalk – a fraud?") says the app pushes families toward uncertified gemstones, including one stone bought for about ₹5k with no certificate. This is anecdotal. — TechEnclave
  • AstroTalk's Trustpilot reviews mention fake bracelets, poor call quality, wrong and contradictory predictions from different astrologers, unresponsive support and "junior pandits". — Trustpilot AstroTalk
  • GaneshaSpeaks reviews allege fake gemstones and wrong prediction dates. — Trustpilot GaneshaSpeaks
  • A Q&A aggregator summarising Reddit and Sitejabber reviews cites generic predictions, customer-service problems and astrologer quality that varies a lot. — Techjockey
  • India's cyber-crime warning (I4C, reported by Outlook Money) describes fake "online astrologers" on social media who offer a free or cheap first session, then predict misfortune and ask for money for remedies. — Outlook Money
  • r/vedicastrologyexperts moderators:
    • Jul 2026: warned about AI-generated astrology spam and banned the accounts responsible, after users paid for reports that were low quality, AI-written and full of obvious errors.
    • Jan 2026: introduced "Verified Member" tags to separate credible practitioners from frauds.
    • — Reddit mirror (redlib)
  • Co-Star privacy:
    • Requires birth date, time, place and email.
    • Its App Store privacy label lists Contacts, Identifiers and Usage Data as linked to identity.
    • A Surfshark study (May 2025) found astrology apps collecting up to 8 data types, including contacts and coarse location.
    • Play Store reviewers object to required phone number or Facebook login.
    • Co-Star's listing says it does not "do creepy stuff" with data.
    • — App Store; Surfshark, May 2025; The Outline (older, ~2018)

Inferences

  • The strongest trust signals a new product can offer are:
    • Never selling gemstones or pujas, or never tying a remedy to a purchase.
    • Showing the reasoning behind every statement.
    • Verifying practitioners.
    • Asking for only the minimum data (no contacts, no social login requirement).

Gaps

  • No systematic, quantified review-sentiment analysis (for example app-store review mining) was found.
  • Direct r/vedicastrology and r/astrology threads were not fetched; Reddit evidence above comes via a mirror and aggregators.

3. Unserved gaps and differentiation opportunities

Takeaway

No leader combines all of the following in one beautiful, privacy-first web product:

  • Showing the classical source for each statement (the shloka and rule).
  • Comparing schools side by side (Parashari, Jaimini, KP, Nadi, Western sidereal versus tropical).
  • Teaching in depth.
  • Open methodology.
  • Grounded (non-hallucinating) AI.
  • Indic languages.

CHANI's "human-only" stance and the subreddit's revolt against AI spam both show that authenticity and transparency are what users can't find.

Cited Findings

  • CHANI argues that AI blends schools into incoherent readings, does not credit its sources, and states wrong placements (such as the Moon in the wrong sign) with confidence. CHANI positions itself as human-authored. — CHANI, Oct 2025
  • Apple rejects astrology, horoscope and fortune-telling apps under guideline 4.3 (spam) unless they are a "unique, high-quality experience", and suggests building a web app instead. — Apple Developer Forums; iMore
  • AstroTalk's core business serves marriage questions for 25–35-year-olds, 60% of them women. A growing share of its revenue is international (US-heavy) diaspora users. — Inc42, Aug 2026

Inferences

  • Source transparency ("why" panels citing BPHS, Phaladeepika, Saravali and so on, with chapter and verse plus the computed condition) is the clearest moat. No leader does it systematically (based on the review in this session; not exhaustively verified).
  • School comparison: show the same chart read under different schools and ayanamsas (Lahiri, Raman, KP, Fagan-Bradley), with the points of disagreement made explicit.
  • Open methodology: publish the calculation engine version (for example the Swiss Ephemeris), ayanamsa, house system and test vectors checked against Jagannatha Hora.
  • Visualization: the Indian leaders are table-heavy. Design-led Western apps (Co-Star, The Pattern) show that design drives adoption.
  • Web-first sidesteps Apple 4.3 and lets SEO pages and the product be the same thing.
  • Diaspora (US and elsewhere) and multilingual users (Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Sanskrit with transliteration) are underserved by premium-design products.

Gaps

  • No verification that Drik Panchang, AstroSage or Jagannatha Hora lack shloka citations. This is from general familiarity and should be checked by hand.

4. AI in astrology, 2024–2026

Takeaway

AI is now everywhere: Co-Star's Void, AstroSage's "AI Astrology" branding, AI-chatbot startups such as AstroSure, and a flood of AI spam reports. A raw LLM produces wrong charts. Best practice is to compute deterministically (Swiss Ephemeris) and let the LLM interpret only verified data, with citations.

Cited Findings

  • LLMs predict text rather than calculate, so they invent planetary positions. In a vendor test a frontier model put the slow outer planets within half a degree but the Ascendant in the wrong sign, which corrupts all the house cusps. This is a vendor test with unverified method. — RoxyAPI blog; Miracuves
  • The recommended fix is to keep calculation outside the LLM: use tool calls to the Swiss Ephemeris, forbid the model from guessing positions, and validate and log outputs. — RoxyAPI
  • AI launches in the field:
    • Co-Star's Void (AI Q&A, paywalled after 3 questions, around 2023).
    • The AstroSage app listing is branded "AstroSage Kundli: AI Astrology".
    • AstroSure is cited as an AI-consultation challenger to AstroTalk.
    • — Bustle; mwm.ai listing; Inc42
  • Backlash: CHANI positions itself as AI-free (Oct 2025), and r/vedicastrologyexperts banned AI-report sellers (Jul 2026). — CHANI; Reddit mirror

Inferences

  • A responsible AI design would:
    • Use the LLM only as an explainer over a deterministic chart and a curated rule base.
    • Require every AI sentence to cite a rule and shloka ID, and block uncited claims.
    • Label AI content clearly.
    • Not train on user birth data by default.
  • This can be marketed as "AI that shows its sources", which directly answers both CHANI's criticism and the Reddit criticism.

Gaps

  • No independent market-size or adoption data for AI astrology apps was found.
  • No peer-reviewed evaluation of LLM chart accuracy was found.

5. Regulation and ethics

Takeaway

In India the main exposure is:

  • Remedies tied to health claims, under the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act 1954.
  • Misleading or fear-based advertising and dark patterns, under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 and CCPA guidelines.
  • Birth data as personal data under DPDP, with most duties applying from May 2027.

Apple restricts generic astrology apps. The scientific evidence is negative or disputed, so honest positioning is "cultural heritage and reflective practice, not deterministic prediction."

Cited Findings

Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954

  • "Magic remedies" include talismans, mantras and kavachas claimed to have miraculous powers to cure.
  • Section 3 bars ads for diagnosis, cure or prevention of scheduled diseases (54 listed), as well as for sexual performance, conception and menstrual disorders.
  • Section 5 bars ads for magic remedies claiming any Section 3 purpose.
  • Section 7 penalties: up to 6 months' jail or a fine for a first offence, up to 1 year for later offences.
  • — iPleaders
  • A 2020 draft amendment would cover internet ads and raise penalties to 2 years and ₹10 lakh for a first offence (5 years and ₹50 lakh for later ones). No gazette notification bringing it into force was confirmed. A Dec 2025 Supreme Court plea seeks an update of the schedule. — Mondaq; Storyboard18, Dec 2025

Consumer Protection Act 2019 and CCPA guidelines

  • Misleading Advertisements guidelines (notified 9 Jun 2022) cover bait ads, "free" claims, disclaimers and endorser disclosure. They apply to service providers, agencies and endorsers. — Mondaq
  • Dark Patterns guidelines (notified 30 Nov 2023) list 13 dark patterns, including false urgency and fake popularity or scarcity. They apply to all platforms, advertisers and sellers in India and build on ASCI's 2023 deceptive-design guidelines. — JSA; Mondaq
  • ASCI Code (self-regulation) requires ads to be honest and truthful and not to exploit consumers. No astrology-specific ASCI chapter was found. — ASCI Code
  • For comparison abroad:
    • The UK BCAP code bans TV ads for occult or psychic services; horoscopes may be advertised as entertainment only, without claims of accuracy. — ASA/BCAP
    • France's ARPP Occult Sciences Code bans promises of guaranteed results. — ARPP

DPDP Act 2023 and Rules 2025

  • The Rules were notified 13/14 Nov 2025 and phase in as follows:
    • Data Protection Board provisions applied immediately.
    • Consent Managers apply at 12 months (Nov 2026).
    • Notices, verifiable consent, security safeguards, breach reporting and children's data apply at 18 months (about 13/14 May 2027).
  • Penalties go up to ₹250 Cr for security failures.
  • — DSK Legal; Compliance Hub

App stores

  • Apple guideline 4.3 lists fortune telling as a saturated category and rejects such apps unless they are unique and high quality. Apple suggests web apps instead. — Apple Developer Forums; iMore

Scientific evidence

  • Carlson, Nature 318:419–425 (5 Dec 1985), double-blind test:
    • 28 professional astrologers helped design the test.
    • Subjects picked their own chart in 28 of 83 cases, about chance level for a three-way choice.
    • The result is disputed: Ertel (2009) reanalysed it and found marginal above-chance matching (p = .054), and Vidmar (2008) criticised the design.
    • — IMSc summary; Wikipedia: Shawn Carlson; eScholarship critique
  • Dean & Kelly, "Is Astrology Relevant to Consciousness and Psi?", J. Consciousness Studies 10(6–7):175–198 (2003):
    • Time twins (people born less than 5 minutes apart) showed no hint of the similarities astrology predicts.
    • A meta-analysis of 40+ controlled studies found astrologers performing no better than chance.
    • Astrologers who claimed psychic ability did no better than those who did not.
    • — Ingenta; PhilPapers

Inferences

  • Product rules that follow from the law:
    • Never connect a remedy (mantra, gemstone, yantra, puja) to curing illness, fertility or sexual function, because of the 1954 Act.
    • No countdown or scarcity banners and no fear-to-purchase flows, because of the CCPA dark-patterns guidelines.
    • Disclose paid or affiliate astrologer endorsements, because of the 2022 guidelines.
  • Privacy:
    • Treat birth date, time and place as personal data. Collect no contacts, use local-first or encrypted chart storage, and give one-click deletion.
    • Design for DPDP's May 2027 duties now, and GDPR for EU users.
    • (GDPR and the FTC were not researched in depth this session. General principle: an exact birth date, time and place combined with a name is identifying data.)
  • Honest positioning:
    • Present Jyotisha as a living textual and cultural tradition and a reflective tool.
    • Cite the evidence openly on an "Evidence" page that includes the disputes over Carlson.
    • Make no claims of guaranteed outcomes or deterministic accuracy. This matches the BCAP and ARPP norms and CCPA truthfulness requirements.
  • Ethical revenue options:
    • Subscriptions for deep tools.
    • Paid courses and certification.
    • Optional consultations with vetted astrologers at transparent flat fees, not per-minute pricing that rewards keeping users on the line.
    • B2B or API access to the cited rule engine.
    • No gemstone or puja commerce.

Gaps

  • The text of the US FTC's "for entertainment purposes" norms was not retrieved.
  • The current Google Play policy on astrology was not checked.
  • No EU GDPR guidance specific to birth data was retrieved.
  • No CCPA enforcement action specifically against astrology platforms was found.
  • No astrology-specific ASCI guideline was found; ASCI's complaint reports may contain astrology cases.

6. SEO and content opportunities

Takeaway

The traffic leaders get their volume from programmatic reference pages (daily panchang by city and date, festival dates, muhurat, kundli tools). This category is proven at 10M+ visits a month per site, but no keyword-level search volumes were found.

Cited Findings

  • Drik Panchang gets about 11.7–11.9M visits a month (Aug–Sep 2025). Its pages are city- and date-specific panchang, shubh dates, deities and Hindi versions (?lang=hi). — Semrush; Drik Panchang Hindi
  • Prokerala gets 9–14M visits a month (2025) and has the highest organic traffic estimate in the Ahrefs India ranking (7.8M). — Semrush; Ahrefs

Inferences

  • Programmatic page families to build:
    • Daily panchang for each city × date.
    • A nakshatra page for each of the 27 nakshatras (and their padas), with shlokas.
    • Pages for each graha in each rashi and bhava, each citing classical sources.
    • Festival and vrat date pages per city.
    • Muhurat pages.
    • Yoga dictionary pages with the computable rule.
  • Each should be produced in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.
  • Citing sources gives these pages E-E-A-T value that competing pages lack.

Gaps

  • Monthly search volumes for "kundli", "horoscope", "panchang", "nakshatra" and "birth chart" were not obtained. They need Google Keyword Planner, Semrush or Ahrefs directly.
