The Study of Jyotisha · Chapter 29 of 54 · Part Six · Judging the houses
The fourth house: home, mother and happiness
What the fourth house means
Varahamihira's word for the fourth house is relations (bandhu), and its technical names include Griha ("dwelling"), Sukha ("happiness"), Hibuka, Ambu ("water") and Vesma ("house") (Brihat Jataka I.15–18). Aiyar's note lists relations, education, the mother, cows, the dwelling place, carriages and comfort. The later books add: land and property, vehicles, the native place, the heart and chest, peace of mind, schooling, and inner contentment.
The thread: the foundations of life — where one comes from, where one lives, and the inner security that makes happiness possible. The 4th is the bottom of the chart, the point below the earth (Chapter 6), and it stands for what lies beneath and supports everything else.
It is a kendra (angle), one of the four strongest houses. With the 8th, it is also called a chaturasra (Brihat Jataka I.16).
Significators
- The Moon is the natural significator (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 32.31–34): the mother, the mind, comfort. Later authors add Mercury for education and Venus for vehicles.
- The mother is also judged from the 4th from the Moon (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 7.39–43), and Parashara makes the stronger of the Moon and Mars the significator of the mother (32.18–21).
- The chaturthamsa (D4) is read for fortune and property (Chapter 12).
Directional strength in the 4th
The Moon and Venus get their full directional strength in the 4th house (Brihat Jataka II.19, Chapter 14): the planets of feeling and comfort are at home at the bottom of the chart. A strong Moon or Venus in the 4th is a classic sign of a happy home and inner contentment.
Planets in the fourth house
| Planet in the 4th | Varahamihira says |
|---|---|
| Sun | grief and mental suffering (XX.2) |
| Moon | full enjoyment of the house's matters: happy, with kin and houses, learned (XX.4, with Aiyar's note) |
| Mars | as the Sun: grief (XX.6) |
| Mercury | learned (XX.6) |
| Jupiter | living in comfort (XX.7) |
| Venus | as Jupiter: comfort (XX.8) |
| Saturn | as the Sun: grief (XX.9) |
Benefics in the 4th give comfort and learning; malefics disturb the peace of the home and mind. Again: scaled by dignity (XX.10–11). Mars in its own sign or exalted in the 4th, for example, gives property and courage rather than grief.
The later books add: Rahu in the 4th, an unsettled or unconventional home life, residence away from the native place; Ketu, detachment from home and possessions.
The lord of the fourth house
| 4th lord in the … | Home and happiness are bound up with |
|---|---|
| 1st | the self; happiness made by one's own effort |
| 2nd | family and wealth |
| 3rd | siblings, travel, effort |
| 4th | a stable home; property (strong if dignified) |
| 5th | children, learning, creativity |
| 6th | work, service; disputes over property |
| 7th | partner, marriage |
| 8th | change, upheaval, inheritance |
| 9th | fortune, the father, religion |
| 10th | career and public life; property from work |
| 11th | gains, friends |
| 12th | living abroad or away; spending on the home |
The 4th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th makes the Phaladeepika's "Kuhu" (Chapter 21).
The example chart: Capricorn in the 4th
The house itself
- Sign: Capricorn, a movable, earthy sign of Saturn: practical, ambitious, disciplined, traditional.
- Occupant: Rahu.
- Aspects: three planets in Cancer aspect Capricorn by their 7th aspect: exalted Jupiter, Venus (the ascendant lord) and the Sun.
- Ashtakavarga: 29 points, just below 30: middling-good.
Rahu in the 4th
Rahu gives the results of the lord of its sign, Saturn (Chapter 22), and of its own nature: the unusual, the foreign, restlessness and ambition. In the 4th, by the later readings, it suggests a home life that is not entirely conventional or settled, or a move away from the native place. Rahu's own dasha (2000–2018, ages 10 to 28, Chapter 22) ran through the years of schooling and higher education, which the 4th house signifies: education was a central theme of that period.
Its lord: Saturn
Saturn, lord of the 4th (and 5th), is the yogakaraka, in the 3rd house (Chapter 28). Home, property and happiness are reached by the person's own sustained effort (3rd house), not given. Saturn's dasha (2034–2053, Chapter 22) will bring the 4th house's matters to the fore — property and home — around ages 44 to 63.
Aspects
The strongest feature of this 4th house is the aspect of three planets from the 10th: exalted Jupiter (the great benefic), Venus (the ascendant lord and a significator of comfort), and the Sun. A benefic aspect protects a house; Jupiter's, exalted, protects it strongly. And the axis itself is important: the 4th (home) and 10th (career) are opposite, and this chart's 10th is very strong. The person's home is likely to be shaped by their career — perhaps a home that follows the work, or comfort earned through public life.
Its significator: the Moon
The Moon is exalted (in Taurus) but in the 8th house and waning (Chapter 15). The 4th from the Moon is Leo, with Mercury in it. A mind of real depth and strength (exalted Moon), but one that keeps much private (8th house), and is weaker in the dark half of the month.
The mother
The 4th house (protected by Jupiter's aspect), the Moon (exalted but in the 8th), and the 4th from the Moon (Leo, with Mercury) together suggest a mother who is a strong and capable figure, with a close but complex bond. The Moon in the 8th in exchange with Venus (Chapter 19) ties the mother, the person's own self and the hidden 8th house together: a relationship with depth and some intensity.
The reading
The home and inner life are supported but not effortless: Rahu brings change and unconventionality; Saturn, the lord, asks for effort; exalted Jupiter's aspect protects. Happiness at home is closely linked to the strong 10th house: comfort comes through work and public life. Property and settledness come later rather than earlier, in Saturn's long dasha.
Summary
- The fourth house is home, the mother, relations, education, land, vehicles, comfort and peace of mind (Brihat Jataka I.15–18); it is a kendra.
- Its significator is the Moon; the mother is also judged from the 4th from the Moon.
- The Moon and Venus have full directional strength in the 4th (Brihat Jataka II.19).
- Benefics in the 4th give comfort and learning; malefics, grief or disturbance — scaled by dignity (Brihat Jataka XX).
- The example chart: Rahu in Capricorn, aspected by exalted Jupiter, Venus and the Sun; its lord Saturn, the yogakaraka, in the 3rd — a home life supported by career and built by effort.
Exercises
- Which two planets have full directional strength in the 4th? Why does this fit the house's meaning?
- Saturn is in the 4th house in Libra. What does Varahamihira's rule say, and how does Saturn's dignity change it?
- For a Cancer ascendant, which planet rules the 4th, and is it also a yogakaraka?
- Where would you look, besides the 4th house, to judge the mother?
- In the example chart, which planet's aspect most protects the 4th house?
Answers: 1. The Moon and Venus: the planets of feeling and comfort, at the bottom of the chart, the place of home and inner security. 2. The rule for Saturn in the 4th is as for the Sun: grief (XX.9, XX.2). Libra is Saturn's exaltation, so by XX.11 the bad results fail; Saturn there is more likely to give lasting property and a disciplined, stable home. 3. Libra is the 4th from Cancer: Venus. For Cancer, the yogakaraka is Mars (5th and 10th), not Venus (4th and 11th). 4. The Moon and its condition, the 4th from the Moon, the stronger of the Moon and Mars (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 32.18–21), and the 4th lord. 5. Jupiter's: exalted, the great benefic, aspecting Capricorn from the 10th.
