Marriage matching · guna milan and porutham
What the matching rules actually say
Two birth stars, or two birth dates, times and places. You get both systems - the North Indian 36 gunas and the South Indian ten poruthams - exactly as the texts give them, with the exceptions the texts themselves allow, and how common each result is. Nothing is sent anywhere.
The 36 gunas (Ashtakoota)
| Koota | What it compares | Classical | Websites |
|---|
Classical: Muhurta Chintamani 6.21-37 with its author's own commentary (1928 printing), including the exceptions it states. Websites: the tables most calculators use, which differ from the commentary in several cells and apply none of its exceptions. Vashya and yoni use the common tables in both columns, because the text gives only a rule and examples.
The ten poruthams (South India)
Kalaprakasika (1917 translation), chapter XIII. Its rule: at least five of the ten should agree; Dina and Rajju come first. It also excuses the rajju, vedha, gana and rasi faults when the two signs have the same lord or friendly lords, or face each other.
