The ninth house: fortune, dharma and the father

What the ninth house means

Varahamihira's word for the ninth house is deeds of virtue (dharma); its technical names are Guru ("father or preceptor"), Tapas ("austerity") and Tritrikona ("the third trikona") (Brihat Jataka I.15–19). Aiyar's note lists deeds of virtue, the father and medicine. The later books add: fortune and luck (bhagya), religion and philosophy, teachers and gurus, higher learning, long journeys and pilgrimage, law and ethics, grandchildren, and the blessings of past good deeds.

The thread: what one is given from above — by fortune, by teachers, by the father, by the dharma one follows — and one's own sense of right. If the 5th house is the merit one brings into life, the 9th is the grace that meets it.

The 9th is the strongest of the trikonas (the 1st, 5th and 9th); its lord is the best lord by lordship for any ascendant after the ascendant lord (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 34.2–15, Chapter 19).

Significators

  • Jupiter is the natural significator (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 32.31–34): dharma, teachers, fortune.
  • The Sun is the significator of the father; the father is also judged from the 9th from the Sun (7.39–43). Parashara names the stronger of the Sun and Venus as the significator of the father (32.18–21).
  • The dvadashamsa (D12) is read for parents (Chapter 12).

Some later astrologers read the father from the 10th house instead of the 9th; the south and north of India have differed on this. This course follows the classical texts, which use the 9th.

Planets in the ninth house

Planet in the 9th Varahamihira says
Sun children, wealth and comfort — or, by another reading, neither children nor wealth (XX.3)
Moon liked by all, with children, friends, kin and wealth (XX.5)
Mars a harsh line ("a sinner") (XX.6)
Mercury as the Sun (XX.6)
Jupiter devout (XX.7)
Venus as Jupiter: devout (XX.8)
Saturn as the Sun (XX.9)

The later readings: a planet in the 9th colours the person's beliefs, their teachers and their luck. The Sun, a principled, authoritative outlook and an important father; the Moon, a devotional, caring faith; Mars, a fighting faith or a combative relation with authority and tradition; Mercury, an intellectual approach to belief, love of learning; Jupiter, real wisdom and good fortune (Jupiter is especially strong in its own house of dharma); Venus, a gentle, aesthetic devotion; Saturn, a serious, ascetic or late-developing faith; Rahu, unorthodox or foreign beliefs; Ketu, renunciation.

The lord of the ninth house

9th lord in the … Fortune and dharma come through
1st the self: a fortunate, principled person
2nd wealth and family
3rd effort, communication, short travel
4th home, the mother, land; a kendra–trikona link
5th intelligence, children, merit — a classic raja yoga link
6th service, overcoming obstacles (a weaker placement)
7th the partner, partnerships, foreign lands
8th hidden matters, sudden events, inheritance (weaker)
9th strong fortune and faith (if dignified)
10th career and public life: a kendra–trikona raja yoga
11th gains and friends
12th foreign lands, spiritual life, spending (weaker)

The 9th lord in a kendra in dignity, with a strong ascendant lord, forms Lakshmi yoga (Chapter 19). The 9th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th makes the Phaladeepika's "Nirbhagya" ("without fortune", Chapter 21) — to be judged, like all such yogas, with the whole chart.

The example chart: Gemini in the 9th

The house itself

  • Sign: Gemini, a dual, airy sign of Mercury: curiosity, learning, communication, versatility.
  • Occupants: none.
  • Aspects: Saturn, from Sagittarius, by its 7th aspect. Saturn is the yogakaraka (lord of the 4th and 5th).
  • Ashtakavarga: 27 points: middling.

Its lord: Mercury

Mercury rules the 9th and the 12th for a Libra ascendant. It is in Leo, in the 11th house, a friend's sign (Chapter 10). The 9th lord in the 11th: fortune through gains, networks, friends and elder siblings; good fortune that shows in income. Mercury in the 11th is also part of the chart's wealth yoga (benefics in upachayas, Chapter 18). And Mercury is 2nd from the Sun, forming a benefic Vesi yoga (Chapter 18).

But Mercury also rules the 12th, so the fortune it brings is connected with spending, foreign lands and the spiritual.

Saturn's aspect

The yogakaraka aspecting the 9th: a serious, disciplined approach to learning and belief, perhaps a faith that matures late or is tested. Saturn, lord of the 5th, aspecting the 9th, links the two trikonas.

The significators

  • Jupiter, significator of the 9th, is exalted in the 10th — dharma expressed in action and career.
  • The Sun, significator of the father, is in the 10th, with full directional strength. The 9th from the Sun is Pisces, aspected by exalted Jupiter.

The father

The 9th house (aspected by Saturn, its lord Mercury in the 11th), the Sun (strong in the 10th) and the 9th from the Sun (protected by Jupiter) together suggest a father who is a capable, respected figure in the public world (Sun in the 10th), with a relationship that is serious and perhaps formal (Saturn's aspect on the 9th). The course goes no further than that.

The reading

A sound but not exceptional 9th house by itself: empty, middling points, aspected by a serious Saturn. But its significator Jupiter is exalted in the 10th, and its lord Mercury is in the 11th of gains. Fortune comes through the career and through networks rather than as unearned luck; the person's dharma is expressed in their work; learning is approached seriously and grows with age.

Summary

  • The ninth house is dharma, fortune, the father, teachers, religion, higher learning and long journeys (Brihat Jataka I.15–19); it is the strongest trikona.
  • Its significator is Jupiter; the father is judged also from the Sun and the 9th from the Sun.
  • Varahamihira's rules give the Moon, Jupiter and Venus good results in the 9th (Brihat Jataka XX).
  • The 9th lord is a good lord for every ascendant; linked to a kendra lord it forms a raja yoga; in a kendra in dignity it can form Lakshmi yoga.
  • The example chart: an empty Gemini 9th aspected by Saturn, its lord Mercury in the 11th, its significator Jupiter exalted in the 10th — fortune through work and networks.

Exercises

  1. Why is the 9th house called the strongest of the trikonas?
  2. For a Taurus ascendant, which planet rules the 9th? Which is the yogakaraka for Taurus?
  3. Which two houses are used for the father, and by whom?
  4. What does Varahamihira say about Jupiter in the 9th?
  5. In the example chart, how does the 9th lord's placement colour the person's fortune?

Answers: 1. Because it is the furthest trikona from the ascendant, the house of dharma and fortune, and its lord is counted the best lord after the ascendant lord. 2. Capricorn is the 9th: Saturn; Saturn (9th and 10th) is also the yogakaraka. 3. The classical texts use the 9th (with the Sun as significator); some later astrologers use the 10th. 4. The person will be devout (XX.7). 5. Mercury, the 9th lord, is in the 11th: fortune shows itself in gains, income, friends and networks.
